"I've been fairly disappointed with the many paleo cookbooks I've bought. I pre-ordered this book and promptly forgot.
A friend of mine sent me a few recipes from Ms. Fragoso's other book, Everyday Paleo and I loved them. They were exactly the kind of things I wanted to see, and could work my own magic on.
Imagine my delight when this book showed up and was from the same author!
This weekend, I made three dishes and all three have turned out fantastic!
A word: This probably isn't very good for Whole30. Unless you want to make all the ingredients from scratch (which she does supply instructions for) you are going to end up with SOME sugar or soy. But, not very much. I'm comfortable with that. She also offers some twists if you are more open in your paleo regimen.
I highly recommend this book!"

- I've been fairly disappointed with the many paleo cookbooks I've bought.

I highly recommend this book! - Like her Italy book, Sarah Fragoso has not simply made a cookbook--she has immersed herself in a culture and done her best to convey to her readers how this culture is expressed through food. While the Italy book taught me much about how Italians value slowing down to appreciate things and how they value fresh ingredients, this Thai book is has helped me to appreciate how Thai food is simultaneously precise (in flavor composition) and yet still personal. So these recipes are delivered in the most authentic fashion--preserving this precision of flavor--but with tips for how to personalize and tailor to my preference. While some ingredients are harder to find, this book has great suggestions in first of all, how to substitute, but more importantly how to track them down to make the dish more authentic. This means I can use the book right away with what I have in my grocery store but I can also do a little hunting (with Fragoso's guidance in the book) to find some of the traditional ingredients to help me truly experience the dish accurately. I also love how the book helps you have options in using Rice/Rice Noodles or how to make creative alternatives out of common items like zucchini or cauliflower. If you love Thai food, but are leary of MSG and Gluten, this is simply the best cookbook I've ever seen. There's nothing like it out there.
- April of this year (2012), I ordered Cordain's book "The Paleo Diet Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Foods You Were Designed to Eat". I was so blown away that I began rabidly researching both Paleo and Primal diets. Our whole family converted to Paleo eating immediately and we have not looked back. Reading the reviews of this book in April, I was skeptical about it and decided against it as a first Paleo cookbook based on the reviews. I bought instead Well Fed Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat,Make it Paleo Over 200 Grain Free Recipes For Any Occasion and Paleo Comfort Foods Homestyle Cooking for a Gluten-Free Kitchen. I would recommend any of those books over this one - especially if you are new to the Paleo Diet/Lifestyle and are looking for a good cookbook.
THE IDIOTIC
THIS BOOK IS THREE HUNDRED AND THREE PAGES. THE AUTHOR SPENT SEVENTY ONE PAGES DESCRIBING PHYSICAL FITNESS - AND NO WHERE, NOT ONE PAGE IS THERE A LIST OF THE RECIPES IN THIS BOOK. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!
There is a recipe index. It lists every ingredient in the book. Get ready to work to find something to cook. Why? Let's say it's two hours before dinner, you look in the fridge to see what vegetable you have to cook with your steak that is marinating - you find spinach. Since THE RECIPES ARE NOT LISTED ANYWHERE!!! - you go to the handy index. It tells you Spinach is on 55,79,105,113,131,183,185,190-191,201,222-223,225-226. Raw Spinach 201 - Spinach leaves 105,113,115,113. Get to work!!! You can narrow it down a bit since Veggies and Salads are between 118-148. However Soups, Stews and Sauces are between 149-176. Since Beef, Pork and Lamb is between 58-95, you might want to check out the recipe 79 just to be sure. Now multiply that by infinity, take that to the depth of forever, and you will have a glimpse of what I'm talking about. So this book is all but useless for planning a meal from your fridge unless you want to read each recipe one by one.
THE FRUSTRATING
There are inconsistencies and annoying errors - I am listing just some examples.
Incomplete or missing info
Puerto Rican Beef Recipe - basically a beef stir fry - does not tell you how many servings. Most of the other recipes do - but for something like a stir fry I really need to know. Guess her proofreaders failed her.
Unrealistic prep times
Butternut Squash Soup - Prep time 20 minutes, cook time 15 minutes. However, the recipe states to cook the squash in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes. Later I bring water to a boil and cook for 15 minutes. Then remove and let sit for 5 minutes - see what I am getting at? The prep and cook times are probably off by 10 minutes a piece - could be significant if you are time constrained.
Lack of options
Butternut Squash Soup - The recipe states to cook the squash in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes - but what if I don't have one? Some of the recipes tell you what to do, others don't. Seems this author loves the pressure cooker, and I admit she does tell you to get one in her equipment section. Shame on you if you didn't.
Oprah Style Encouragement and Life Change Message
Maybe others need this type of motivation and encouragement, but I'd be more motivated by getting the pertinent info I paid for and not all of this other spiritual and mental gobbledygook.
Exercise
I get it - our Paleolithic ancestors were more physically active than we are today. When I want an exercise book, I will buy one. I bought this to show me what and how to cook. The extra 71 pages I have to skip past and deal with while I am cooking is annoying.
THE GOOD
Pages 15-24 and Pages 35-38 outlining what it means in both material, equipment and organizational skills to switch to the Paleo Diet. The food and equipment charts are good, along with the expected shopping changes and food substitutions. Although I have found this in other books her presentation is concise and relatively thorough. The smoothie section was ok, and the thirty day meal planner and school lunch section are also helpful. I have only had the book a week, and the five recipes I cooked turned out just okay. They will be better the second time around when I adjust for their weakness. I did not take off a star for this as I find recipes from many books need tweaking, but these seem to be a good base to start from.
From what I could bear to read about the author and her family - they are top notch people whom I would absolutely love to be my neighbors. Their intentions and ambitions are good but at the end of the day I need to feed my family and this book makes that much more difficult than it has to be... The author is an everyday Mom who has powered her family to Paleo greatness. This does not mean she is proficient at helping others to have the same success. This can be a decent book if you are Paleo, have a repertoire already and don't mind seeing if this book adds a couple of new recipes to your stable. In that case I would buy it used but there are much better options for beginners. - I really liked this cookbook; it was my primary source of recipes when I started a 3-month "paleo challenge" at my gym last year. That was a life -changing decision -- after a decade of constant unexplained fatigue and weight gain despite a "low-fat" diet, I lost 25 pounds in 3 months of paleo and couldn't believe how clear-headed I suddenly felt (warning-- there are a few days of feeling foggy and hungry and crappy while adjusting to paleo, but within a week it was phenomenal how great I felt. Cutting out gluten seems to be the main factor, and I wish I'd known years ago how much of a difference that simple change could make.).
The recipes in this book were my first real experience with cooking meat (I would eat it occasionally but cooked vegetarian/vegan) and I thought the recipes were easy to follow, flavorful, and satisfying. After years of mostly vegetarian dinners, suddenly I wasn't hungry every night at bedtime. Upping the protein and fat made it easier to eat smaller portions. I like that these recipes include a lot of vegetables as well.
There are some ingredients that may not be in every regular grocery store, but if you can't find them locally they're pretty easy to order online. Most of the recipes use "normal" ingredients though.
I was intimidated by such a big change to switch to a paleo diet, and this book was great to walk me through it. Her writing style is friendly, upbeat and engaging. As a mom I could definitely relate to her.
I've gotten more paleo cookbooks since I started with this one, but this is still one of my favorites.
