Catamarans The Complete Guide for Cruising Sailors Gregor Tarjan 9780071498852 Books Reviews
- I was scheduled to sail a Cat in Seychelles last july... and was threatened because it was to be my first time skippering a cat !!!... as in the past I had only bareboated monohulls... so I found this book in . From the sailing perspective... the book is ok, and I was able to understand the main differences between a cat and a monohull.. It seems to me the author is a clear supporter of cats... and strongly advocates for this type of boats. In fact, I have chartered for over 25 years... and I do recognize that cats are increasing they share in all fleets. There is a lot of additional information, as the building process which is interesting. Also a review of a lot of the most popular models.. but the risk here is that the book may be outdated soon, as the industry is continuously evolving.
- This is the “Gold Standard†of books on catamarans. It has an incredible amount of well researched information on the construction and the details of sailing these boats. I borrowed it from a friend during my search for buying a cat and decided it was something I would want to refer to in the future, so I purchased my own copy. It has been updated recently with a listing and description of most of the popular production carts. I have been a monohull sailor for decades and have charted large cats in the Caribbean on several occasions, but I didn’t realize how little I really knew about them before reading this.
- This book is not about cruising on catamarans. It is however a great book about naval architecture and design of catamarans, with two shallow chapters that mostly compare semanship and heavy weather aspects of cruising with monohulls. It should be called "The complete Guide for Experienced Monohull Cruisuing Sailors"
Also, it feels like its printed on an ink jet printer on vary bad quality paper. Pages curl!!!! It feels like I printed a PDF at home and that's what I'm reading. Shame on you McGraw Hill - If you actually have sailed, sail or want to sail a catamaran -- don't bother with this book. This is "Sailboat Porn". Get excited looking at beautiful pictures of beautiful boats in beautiful places with the occaisonal beautiful women. It can be fun.
However, if you want to learn how to sail, but a different book. The rare technical diagrams are not even very cat-specific.
Save your money! - Provides a very usefull overview of the capabilities of sailing catamarans and the differences to monohulls or how the authors calls them "balasted keel boats". The authors insights from naval architects view are thorough and practical. The book is well organized. I wished he would have put more emphasize on sub-45 ft yachts as this is what most of us can affort. Nevertheless, the book clarifies many misconceptions of catamarans in a ballanced manor. I recommend this book to both cat enthusiasts and critics as well as any person who is contempltaing to sail on a sailin catamaran.
- The book spent the majority of the time explaining why you should purchase a catamaran over a monohull. If you are trying to decide if you want to purchase a catamaran this book does a great job of explaining the differences between the two types of boats. If you are looking at it as a book to learn how to sail, maintain or use a catamaran then this is not the right book. Definitely not worth the price unless you you have no idea what a catamaran is.
- When I received this book and I picked it up and scoured through it! I have sailed Hobie Cats for over 20 years, and been on more than a few monohulls. We are thinking of cruising, and needed some help deciding on which make/ model/ attributes we should consider. This has the perfect mix of a travel brochure and a college text book. Pictures are clear and exciting. Explanations are understandable and succinct. It is technical without being boring, detailing sailing in heavy weather, describing efficiencies between hull design and points to wind, and a walk through on a plethora of popular vessels. The illustrations are amazing, and the content is, as the title claims, COMPLETE. I highly recommend this book if you have any desire to learn more about Catamarans and/or Cruising.
- Well thought out and written in an easy to understandway. Very Informative! If you know nothing about Multi hulls or sailing them this is the place to begin. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking into mono versus multi hulls as it provides hard facts vs myths. Money well spent for sure with great photos and diagrams that shed more understanding on the subject.
