A veteran police officer gives his thoughtful, balanced views on police shootings, racial profiling, community relations, and every other aspect of policing―and he’ll change what you think about the police.
From the author of the acclaimed 400 Things Cops Know, Police Craft is a thought-provoking and revelatory examination of policing in America, as seen by a working police officer. Adam Plantinga, a 17-year veteran sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department, gives an inside view of the police officer’s job, from handling evidence and conducting interrogations to coping with danger, violence, and death. Not hesitating to confront controversial issues, Plantinga presents the police officer’s views on police shootings, racial profiling, and relationships between police and the community―and offers reasoned proposals on what the police and the public can do better.
Hard-boiled, humorous, and compassionate, Plantinga wrestles with the complexities and contradictions of a job he loves in which he witnesses so much suffering. Transcending today’s strident pro-cop/anti-cop rhetoric, Police Craft will give every reader a greater respect for the police and greater understanding of the job they do.

Police Craft What Cops Know About Crime Community and Violence Adam Plantinga 9781610353311 Books Reviews
- The truth about being a cop, good and bad. A must read for anyone interested in what's happening in law enforcement today.
- Met the speaker--very personable. Great book, fast read, funny, & enjoyed it very much. Very well written. And the audio book is really really great also. Bought 4 copies to give away as gifts for my cop family.
- Already was motivated "to follow" Adam Plantinga, and wrote a review of this book. I give it a 10+. Stimulating, thought provoking and woven with first hand experience, and often laced with Adam's humor that made me laugh out loud.
- A well written book with great insights which allow the reader a better understanding of the life and risks of policing in today’s cities. Interspersed with the gritty cop stories are adorable anecdotes about his wife and children which make the book all the more poignant and entertaining.
- Read both of his books..loved it.. very informative..can't wait for the third one..hint hint
- Even better than his earlier 400 Things Cops Know, which was outstanding. Here San Francisco PD Sergeant Plantinga gets into more detail about what it's really like to be a cop, day in and day out. Some of my favorite chapters are about Special Operations (SWAT, police dogs, explosives) and interrogations, but on the top of my list is the heartbreakingly poignant--even poetic--chapter about the life on city corners. Plantinga sprinkles his wry humor throughout, thank goodness, and he writes with an assurance that can only come from extensive experience, sensitivity, and a deep intelligence ( degrees in English and criminology Phi Beta Kappa, and magna cum laude). He is an excellent speaker as well. Don't miss this one, even if it's not what you would normally read.
- What all the reviews are missing is the beauty of Adam's writing, its laugh out loud humor, its spot on information, and the simple fact it is just flat out riveting reading from a truly gifted author who also just happens to be a great cop. As an avid reader of true crime, policing, and law enforcement related books for decades, my two cents is that Adam Plantinga is absolutely, positively in the pantheon with Wambaugh, McBain, and the most skilled such scribes who have ever come down the pike. If you doubt me, then read Police Craft, and you'll become a rock solid Plantinga devotee, and I'd put money on it. Well, maybe not money, how about a lot of donuts we'd agree beforehand would all go to the troops who patrol San Francisco's Mission District. Sound fair?
